Comprehensive, proactive anti-virus protection
The McAfee anti-virus scan engine stops all types of viruses and malicious hostile codes, including “traditional” viruses, email worms, Internet worms, DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks, backdoor and remote access Trojans, and zombies. Using technology that drills down into compressed data, PortalShield is also able to find hidden threats buried in .zip and other compressed file types.

Proactive protection is delivered through advanced heuristics and generic detection, which allow PortalShield to protect—in advance—against new, unknown viruses and other threats, blocking hostile codes.

Advanced content management
Lexical scanning and content management capabilities enable PortalShield to apply rules to over 300 document types, including Adobe® Acrobat and Microsoft Office. Using the PortalShield content rules, Microsoft SharePoint 2003 can prevent document download and upload action, and can send alerts to the administrator if the documents contain banned content such as sensitive or offensive information. In addition, administrators can avoid bandwidth degradation by not allowing non-business related files (e.g., .mp3 or .avi) to be uploaded to the SharePoint server.

Preset content rules
PortalShield offers preset content rules to help organizations prevent the spread of inappropriate content such as profanity, racism, or sexism. Easy to use and immediately effective, the preset content rules can be run straight out of the box, or administrators can fine-tune them using advanced custom rule sets. 

Centralized management and reporting
PortalShield enables organizations to leverage their security investment through integration with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, one of the only truly scalable security management tools. ePO™ provides a centralized authority to enforce protection and provides comprehensive and  graphical reports, detailing critical protection coverage information such as “Are all my PortalShield servers protected with the latest engine and DATs?”

In addition, ePO provides remote deployment, enabling large enterprise deployments to be easily managed from a central location. 

Microsoft VSAPI
To provide proactive background scanning, PortalShield uses Microsoft's VSAPI 2.0 technology for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. When used with Windows SharePoint Services v2.0, PortalShield will use Microsoft WSS VSAPI 1.0 for anti-virus and content scanning. 

Automatic updating
Like all McAfee anti-virus solutions, PortalShield can automatically update virus definitions and engines to ensure that it provides the most current protection.
